Christopher Hitchens Debate

Turek vs. Hitchens Debate: Does God Exist? from Andrew Ketchum on Vimeo.

Something I stumbled on, it’s really and interesting if long debate that highlights the main problems of discussing the existence of god(s). Hitchens represents his beliefs eloquently and with a style which flips between relaxed and animatedly enthused almost without warning. His opponent, Dr. Frank Turek, who himself mentions that this is his first formal debate, presents himself much more like a television personality with irritating if well meaning interaction with the audience and initial good grace. He also shouts and declaims his statements in a rather overwhelming way, much like the cleric he no doubt aspires to be.

Though I myself am an atheist and agree with 99.9% of what Hitchens says there are times at which he does not answer the questions posed by his opponent in the terms with which they are asked. Rather than this being a result of his inability to do so it seems that he doesn’t want to patronise the audience and feels that the answers to some questions are self evident.

Anyway, this is a very worthwhile debate to watch, and is entertaining as well as enlightening in terms of revealing the views of the two participants. Also read Sam Harris’ Letter To a Christian Nation which from a European point of view is both encouraging because there are people standing up for an atheist view in America and worrying because of the power of religion within the country itself which this book challenges.
